SACP To Launch Red October Campaign to Prepare for Nedlac Summit on Financial Sector Due End November

04 October 2001

The South African Communist Party (SACP) will launch a Red October 2001 Campaign as detailed below.

DATE : Monday, 08 October 2001
TIME : 12h30 - 14h00
VENUE : Isando Taxi Rank, behind the South African Breweries, Isando, Kempton Park

The launch will be a rally to be addressed by the SACP General Secretary, Blade Nzimande, and national leaders of the ANC and COSATU. The launch will be attended by metal, chemical and food workers who work in Isando.

The main focus the Red October 2001 Campaign is to finalise the demands of workers and communities on the transformation and diversification of the financial sector in advance of the NEDLAC Summit on the Financial Sector. NEDLAC has confirmed that this Summit is planned to take place at the end of November this year. Government, business, labour and community chambers of NEDLAC are currently involved in preparations for this Summit.

The SACP regards the NEDLAC Summit as an important step forward since it launched the Campaign to Make Banks Serve the People in October last year.

The Red October Campaign also follows the successful launching of a broad Campaign Forum which includes the ANC, COSATU, other trade unions, churches, youth, women, co-operatives, NAFCOC and informal businesses. This was launched during September. The Campaign Forum is also involved in preparations for the NEDLAC Summit.

The Red October Campaign will culminate in public meetings in all provinces on the weekend of 10/11 November.
