SACP Unveils Plaque at Its Founding Building

28 July 2001

Earlier today the DEPUTY General Secretary of the South African Communist Party, Jeremy Cronin unveiled a memorial plaque at Number 20 Plein Street in Cape Town at the building where the SACP was founded on 20 July 1921.

This august ceremony was addressed by Charles Nqakula, the SACP National Chairperson and Brian Bunting, SACP Veteran and recipient of the SACP's Moses Kotane award. In his address, Nqakula saluted the founding pioneers of the Communist Party in South Africa. Amongst the pioneers were both parents of Brian Bunting, Sidney and Rebecca Bunting. These Communist pioneers laid the basis for the national liberation of black people and the struggle for socialism in our country. We pledge to continue and emulate their example, says Nqakula.

Later today, the SACP will host a national veteran's dinner in Cape Town as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations.
