SACP to Launch its 80th Anniversary Celebrations

Tomorrow, on what would have been the 59th birthday of Comrade Chris Hani, the South African Communist Party (SACP) will officially launch its 80th Anniversary Celebrations as detailed below.

VENUE : Johannesburg City Hall

This launch will be attended by more than 1500 members and supporters of the SACP and shopstewards of COSATU affiliates in the Wits region. The programme for the launch will include messages of support from the ANC, COSATU and other organisations a Workers Assembly to conduct a Public Evaluation of the SACP, its history and future challenges and an SACP response by Blade Nzimande, the SACP General Secretary.

This Public Evaluation of the SACP through Workers and People's Assemblies will continue throughout the month of July. What does this 80 years of the SACP represent? What is its current role? What is its future? These are just some of the questions which will be addressed in these Assemblies.

Other evens to celebrate the 80 years of the SACP will include:

Greater Johannesburg Workers Assembly to be held in Alexandra township on 21 July 2001. And other Workers Assemblies throughout the country in the month of July.

Main National Rally to be held in Umlazi, Durban on Sunday, 29 July 2001 and to be addressed by Blade Nzimande, the ANC and COSATUI. Also invited are Cabinet Ministers, Embassies, Communist parties from other countries, Faith based organisations and other progressive organisations in the country.

Second National Rally Pela village, Madikwe District in Rustenburg on Sunday, 29 July 2001 - at the village of Moses Kotane, longest serving SACP General Secretary from 1939 to 1978. The rally will be addressed by the SACP National Chairperson, Charles Nqakula, the ANC and COSATU. The rally will be hosted by Chief Gasebonwe of BaKoena in Madikwe. Chief Motsatsi, the chairperson of the North West House of Traditional Leaders is also highly involved in reparations for the rally.

Conferrring the Moses Kotane Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership to SACP Veterans Billy Nair and Brian Bunting at an SACP Veterans Dinner to be held on Saturday, 28 July 2001 in Cape Town and to be addressed by Dr. Nelson Mandela.
