The South African Communist Party (SACP) welcomes the report from the Moscow based Institute of African Studies that the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova received over 50% of votes in parliamentary elections held earlier this week. We congratulate the Moldovan Communists for this remarkable achievement.
Moldova is a former republic under the Soviet Union. It is now a parliamentary republic.
These election results follow the pauperisation and impoverisation of Moldova after capitalist restoration since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. In the last decade, the formerly prosperous Moldova became the second poorest of the former Soviet Union republics and over 20% of its population has become migrant workers.
For the SACP this election victory marks the growing confidence of poor and working people across the world to challenge capitalist globalisation and neo-liberalism.
