SACP Mobilies Thousands Behind Red Saturday Marches Communists Paint South Africa Red

19 October 2000

Led by the General Secretary Blade Nzimande who took part in the SACP leaflet blitz and talked to commuters at the Johannesburg Klein Street taxi rank, the SACP has over the past four weeks interacted with our people about the importance of using our mass power for fundamental socio-economic transformation. Over the last four weeks, we have witnessed thousands of members and supporters of the South African Communist Party (SACP) working tirelessly to ensure an overwhelming success of the 21 October marches and pickets for the transformation of banks and the financial sector.

This week alone SACP branches have led our people in pickets directed at banks in Mafikeng, Klerksdorp, Elsies River, Rustenburg, Taung and Brits. On 21 October, the marches and pickets will take place in more than 25 towns and cities across South Africa.

From the reports gathered from our provinces, literally every major town and city in our country witnessed thousands of communists reaching out to workers, women, farm-workers, youth, the unemployed, pensioners, small business owners and co-operatives. Our people warmly received our activists everywhere they went.

Our provinces are receiving tens of letters daily wherein our people tell us about a range of problems and difficulties they have faced from the banks. The mood amongst our people is enormous. Church ministers, oomama bomthandazo, congregations, taxi drive rs, black and white, basically all of our people want the banks to change. The 21 October day of action will be a milestone in our efforts to build peoples power for fundamental transformation and the eventual winning of socialism in our country, said Blad e Nzimande, SACP General Secretary.
