The South African Communist Party (SACP) fully supports the stand by COSATU leaders to stage a sit-in at NEDLAC offices. In support of the sit-in, the SACP calls on workers, unions and other organisations to support the picket through a lunch-hour picket a s detailed below.
DATE : Friday, 02 June 2000
TIME : 12h30 – 13h30
VENUE : Metal Box House, 22 Owl Street Auckland Park (between SABC and Milpark Holiday Inn)
Transport to leave at 12h00 from COSATU House
1 Leyds Street, corner Biccard, Braamfontein
The sit-in highlights the persistence of government to send junior officials to the NEDLAC discussions on South Africa's continuing job loss crisis. Unemployment remains the top national priority. As COSATU said, "This is a national crisis. We demand that it be treated as such. Sending a deputy director general is a slap in the face." Well said.
The SACP calls on all stakeholders to prioritise stopping job losses and creating new quality and sustainable jobs. In this regard, government must provide clear and direct leadership to drive, transform and turn around the economy for job creation and in favour of the working class and the poor.
Further, the SACP reiterates its call for People’s and Workers Forums Against Job Losses in the townships, informal settlements, rural areas, cities and wherever our people are. These Forums would act as report back and consultative meetings on how to tran sform the economy and create jobs. We cannot leave the economy to the bosses.
