SACP Statement of Felgate's Evidence to the TRC

27th November 1998

The SACP welcomes the evidence of former IFP leader, Walter Felgate, to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission as reported in the Mail & Guardian. We are not surprised by these further revelations. The SACP and the liberation movement as a whole have  always known that the IFP willingly acted as a proxy to the counter-revolutionary forces of the apartheid regime. Nonetheless, Felgate's evidence brings to light some new and  interesting information as to the details and extent of the conspiracy to derail the liberation of our country and the establishment of democracy.

The SACP calls upon all those implicated in the trail of murders, destabilisation and violence to come forward and tell the whole truth. We cannot bring about genuine and lasting peace to our country, and KwaZulu-Natal in particular, unless we get to the bottom of the truth about the origins, character and extent of this destabilisation.

The SACP has been on record as supporting the current peace initiatives in KZN within the context of the TRC processes of full exposure. However, lasting peace can only be brought about if the entire story is told. We further urge the TRC to hand over this  information to the relevant investigative and prosecuting authorities. This is the only way to ensure that our country deals with its past as part of national reconciliation and the healing process, as well as lay a solid foundation for our democracy.
