The SACP expresses its solidarity and support for the COSATU 24 hour strike

Monday, June 2

We beleive that the major thrust of the Basic Conditions of the Employment Bill is extremely progressive, bringing in particular, rights to the most vulnerable sectors of the work force in our country - domestic workers, farm workers and security company workers.

However, experience has taught us that progressivepolicy proposals require mass backing, vigilant mobilisation in order to ensure their effective passage through parliament, and in order to ensure the most progressive outcome possible.

In particular, the Monday strike must be used to warn bosses that there is no going back. The electrol mandate of the ANC -led government is the RDP, which calls for an intergral connection between economic growth and develpoment includes the democratisation of the work-place. All attempts to block work -place democratisation in the name of "competitiveness" "flexibility"or growth must be resisted.
