9 May 1997
The SACP expresses its support for the mobilisation of workers to achieve progressive employments standards legislation. We view COSATU's call for protest actions on May 12 as part and parcel of this just struggle.
In saying this, the SACP calls on workers to direct their protest constructively and strategically. It is our conviction that the major thrust of the present Employment Bill is overwhelmingly progressive. If passed, it will greatly improve the lot of workers in some of the most exploited sectors of our economy - farm-workers, security company employees and domestic workers.
We are aware that there are areas of differences between COSATU and government but we do not believe that these differences are differences of principle, nor are they insurmountable. We call for effective negotiation around them.
The real divisions lie between workers and government on the one hand and Business South Africa on the other. In the last few days BSA has been hiding behind technicalities and court actions. But its real agenda is to completely scupper the progressive thrust of the new Employment Bill.
We call on workers to direct their protests accordingly.
Democratise the work-place!
Forward to a progressive Employment Act!
