Statement on the report of the Argus, 'Mandela steps in as SACP crisis deepens'

The report carried in the Argus April 5/6 is an unfortunate one. Not only are many of the allegations groundless, but in a manner which is indicative of the worst kind of journalism, the Argus did not even ask the SACP for a comment on the allegations and information they claim to possess before going to print, the objective of the article is clear, it is a crude attempt to divide the Alliance in the Western Cape.

The SACP is unaware of any crisis in the Alliance. Whatever political differences exist between and within the ANC and SACP are healthy and are accepted by the leadership of both organisations as such. We are not aware as the SACP of any dissatisfaction of the President with our organisation. We are sure he would of informed us of any of his misgivings before going the press. We are not aware of there being any spokesperson for the Alliance as it stated in the article. The SACP spokesperson was never contacted for comment.

Narima Teegler has resigned from the position of Deputy Secretary. The PEC of the SACP accepted this resignation but not the reasons she expressed in her letter of resignation. The so-called report she has written are hr personal views and do not reflect the views of the state organisation. Perhaps her inexperience as an activist has made her forget that before she should voice any of her views to the public she should raise those views inside the SACP as a member. She has never done so.

The continued vicious attacks on the SACP, the ANC, COSATU and the Alliance by counter-revolutionary forces are noted. WE believe that it is precisely because we are the SACP offer a socialist vision that bourgeois media and anti-communist elements see us as a threat. We take pride in that and will not be swayed by enemies of the revolution.

In relation to the Argus role in this media fiasco we will be complaining to the press council about the unfair journalism that is being practised. As the SACP we have no reservations about the role of the press. They are a necessary feature of any democracy. They should however exercise the rights they have responsibly.
