The party says it will engage with Cosatu in the province next week to consider jointly rolling out a mass action.

The South African Communist Party in the Western Cape has lashed out at the deteriorating state of Metrorail trains operating in Cape Town, threatening possible mass action as a result.

In a statement, SACP provincial secretary Benson Ngqentsu said the party "condemns in the strongest terms possible the deteriorating state of Metrorail trains operating in the working class areas in Cape Town".

Ngqentsu said: "The current state of affairs poses a danger to the safety of the train commuters and exposes vulnerable workers to victimisation by their bosses for failure to arrive on time. The state-owned entity Prasa, must provide alternative means for stranded commuters by availing buses to train commuters till the situation is normalised.

"The SACP will engage with the labour federation Cosatu in the province in its bilateral meeting next week to consider jointly rolling out a mass action. The party further calls on employers to desist from charging workers for train delays which are not of their own making."
