PRETORIA - The South African Communist Party (SACP)'s Solly Mapaila has commended Ahmed Timol's family for their perseverance to uncover the truth surrounding his death.

Mapaila is attending Thursday's proceedings at the High Court in Pretoria.

SACP member Timol died in 1971 after falling from the 10th floor of John Vorster Square Police Station just four days after being detained by the security police.

The original inquest endorsed the police's version that the anti-apartheid activist committed suicide.

Mapaila says he's attending proceedings to support Timol's family.

"It was quite clear based on evidence that there was sheer disregard for the law in the prosecution and killing of our own comrade Timol who, as you know, was a communist and was among the few communist member who were in the country at the time."
