South African Communist Party (SACP) Second Deputy Secretary, Solly Mapaila, has once again accused President Jacob Zuma of being an instrument of factionalism within the African National Congress (ANC).

Mapaila was speaking at the North West provincial elective conference of teacher's union South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) in Rustenburg.

He re-iterated the SACP's view that Zuma should step down.

"Removing Zuma is an important signal of the ANC's intentions to correct it. You can't get rid of factions in the ANC in those factions are protected by the president. We asked the President to rise above factions in the movement so that he can be a unifying figure of the movement.

He should have that prestige, that respect that we can listen to him when he speaks, but when the president becomes an instrument of factions then he can no longer be useful to the movement."
