JOHANNESBURG - Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas says nationwide marches against President Jacob Zuma must not be dismissed, adding the country needs leaders who understand and take cue from the people.
Jonas, an African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee member, addressed hundreds of ANC members in Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth, where the South African Communist Party held a Chris Hani memorial lecture.
Jonas was axed as deputy finance minister following the president's recent Cabinet reshuffle.
He says ANC leaders must acknowledge they have wronged South Africans.
"The people of South Africa and the nation is in distress. It is the nation that is angry with us. We need to accept and acknowledge that we have done wrong in many ways."
Earlier this month, South Africans took to streets and called for the president to step down following his Cabinet reshuffle and the country's downgrade to junk status.

But the president said the marches proved that racism was still alive in the country and criticised some posters used by protesters, which he described as racist.
"The marches that took place last week demonstrated that racism is real and exists in our country," the president said.
