JOHANNESBURG - As President Jacob Zuma prepares to address the annual Chris Hani wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, the South African Communist Party (SACP), which has called on him to step down, says it will reiterate this call.
Today marks the 24th anniversary of Chris Hani's death.
The struggle icon was gunned down by white nationalists outside his Boksburg home in the run-up to the first democratic elections.
"With this gross misconduct, he should be able to vacate his seat of office as president of the Republic."
This is what the SACP's second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila says will be his reminder to the Zuma on Monday.
When asked how he feels about sharing the stage with the same man his party wants removed from office, this is what he had to say.
"We'll express our views, it's as simple as that. We'll express our views clearly, trying to come to the decorum of the event."
He says keeping quiet would disappoint Chris Hani.
"We're in a dilemma of how to make the occasion as solemn as it is and it should be at the same time raise issues that sometimes leaders feel can only be raised in the boardroom."
The president will be the first to speak before the SACP and it's understood he will leave for other engagement after his address.
