THE Umzimkhulu community, led by the South African Communist Party (SACP), handed over a list of grievances to the Umzimkhulu Municipality at a peaceful march recently.
The march started at Mzwandile Mhlawuli Hall in Ward 16 and finished at the municipal offices.
Reading the list of grievances Umzimkhuludistrict SACP secretary, Nhlanhla Zungu, said the state of affairs on housing in the area is undesirable because people continue to wait for houses.
He said many people are homeless and don`t have shelter for their children.
One of their grievances is that they want the Department of Human Settlements to start the construction of low-cost houses in their area.
"The municipality must stop its inhumane and merciless acts of removing homeless people from prefabricated structures that were previously used as dens by criminals before being occupied by stranded people.
"We demand clarity on the sale of low-cost houses while thousands of people remain homeless.
"We want the immediate renovation of the existing housing and we want clarity on the issues of the low-cost housing plans.
"Ownership of low-cost houses in the area must be investigated," said Zungu.
The memorandum was received by municipal manager, Zweliphansi Sikhosana and SACP demanded answers within 14 working days.
