Johannesburg – The SA Communist Party (SACP) on Friday called for protocol and clear policy on the African National Congress succession debate. SACP secretary Blade Nzimande said the ruling party`s succession debate had been marred by turbulence.
"It cannot be that each time there is a talk of succession, we have this turbulence....we are saying this because all this has a destabilising factor in the alliance," Nzimande told reporters in Johannesburg following an augmented central committee meeting.
"There must be some protocol and policy that the ANC needs to develop. We want the ANC to find inclusive views, not factional succession debate."
The journey to the ANC elective congress in December 2017 has so far seen Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and outgoing AU chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma emerging as candidates to replace President Jacob Zuma, whose second term ends next year.
Although Dlamini-Zuma has not publicly accepted her informal nomination, backed mostly by Zuma loyalists, Ramaphosa confirmed his readiness to contest for party leadership this week.
The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the Young Communist League (YCLSA) have come out publicly in support of Ramaphosa.
