South Africa: SACP Given Its First HQ By Union

2016 Tuesday 26TH posted by Morning Star in World

FOR the first time since it was legalised, the South African Communist Party (SACP) will have its own headquarters.

The July edition of SACP publication Umsebenzi (The Worker) revealed to South African communists yesterday that the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) secretly bought an entire building in Johannesburg for the party.

Emerging from illegality with 10,000 members in 1990, the SACP has mushroomed to 220,000 but has never owned its own HQ.

Popcru president Zizamele Cebekhulu and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) president Sdumo Dlamini presented SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande with a symbolic key to the new HQ earlier this month.

Mr Nzimande, who had been unaware of Popcru's intentions said: "I was overwhelmed and shed some tears.

"To Popcru members, we salute you for this historic revolutionary gesture.

"The SACP truly belongs to the workers of this country as their only political vanguard."
