CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Human Settlements Department says the National Department of Public Works has started a process of transferring a piece of its land in Grabouw to the Theewaterskloof Municipality.

This week, the Elgin town was marred by violent protests stemming from land evictions.

In March, residents erected nearly a 1,000 shacks on land owned by the Public Works Department.

Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela earlier this week met with Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi and Theewaterskloof Mayor Chris Punt.

Madikizela says once the land is handed over to the municipality a process will be followed to appoint beneficiaries.

"That does not necessarily mean that the people who are now residing there will be prioritised. Due processes will have to be followed."

At least four of more than 20 people arrested on a rash of charges, including that of public violence, are expected to appear in court on Monday.
