JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party says that Jeremy Cronin’s view on the spy tapes case has been misrepresented.

On Friday the North Gauteng High Court ruled that former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Head, Mokotedi Mpshe's decision not to pursue 783 charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering, against President Jacob Zuma was irrational.

At a Cosatu May Day Rally in Durban on Sunday, Cronin who is the First Deputy General Secretary of the SACP reportedly said it was necessary for Zuma to clear his reputation, as well as those of the ANC and the country.

The SACP has clarified what Cronin meant regarding the ruling.

“Comrade Cronin said that the ball was now squarely in the court of the National Prosecuting Authority,” the party said in a statement.

“He said that Friday’s judgment had not made any finding against President Zuma.

“Rather, the finding was against the former head of the NPA, advocate Mpshe.

“Comrade Jeremy Cronin added that this meant that the NPA was confronted with one of two possibilities - either to provide rational reasons for continuing not to proceed with charges against President Zuma, or, alternatively to proceed with the charges.

"Either way, clear action needs to be taken to remove the cloud that has been hanging over our president and the country.”
