"As the YCLSA we are perplexed as to why Nxesi has to form part of those who had to be reprimanded by the president," Mluleki Dlelanga said.

The Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) has hit back at President Jacob Zuma, saying his decision to reprimand Public Works Minister and South African Communist Party (SACP) deputy chairperson Thulas Nxesi, for his role in the Nkandla saga was uncalled for.

Last week Zuma sent letters to Nxesi, former police minister, Nathi Mthethwa and former public works minister Geoff Doidge reprimanding them for their role in the multi-million security upgrades carried out at Zuma’s homestead in Nkandla, as ordered by Constitutional Court.

This latest development comes amid continuing fall out between Zuma and SACP over claims that the SACP is quietly discussing his removal from office.

"As the YCLSA we are perplexed as to why Nxesi has to form part of those who had to be reprimanded by the president," league national secretary Mluleki Dlelanga said yesterday.

"What baffles us is that Nxesi’s first task as minister was to investigate corruption and take curative measures against those who were involved in corrupt activities on the project."

Dlelanga said recommendations by the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela do not have any adverse finding on Nxesi.

He said the league also find it very confusing that Police Minister Nathi Nhleko was not reprimanded for his role in the Nkandla debacle.

"As a matter of fact the report of the public protect did not mention Nxesi and this leaves us flabbergasted as to why he was parachuted into the matter," he said.

The DA has described Zuma’s letters to the three officials as a "joke."
