The South African Communist Party (SACP) held a picket against the deduction of social grants by parasitic multinationals in.

The picket was held outside the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offices in Gugulethu last Wednesday.

“The picket is meant to demonstrate our dissatisfaction on the collusion of the agency with parasitic multinational financial service providers resulting in the shortages of social grants,” said SACP spokesman Masonwabe Sokoyi.

He said they have learnt through their “Know and Act in your Neighbourhood” campaign that recipients of the social grants, which include the elderly and children under foster care, do not receive full payment the grants due to deductions of airtimes, electricity and at times loan sharks.

“The SACP financial sector campaign has long advocated for the capacitation of the post office and licensing of Postbank so that it can be able to distribute all social grants,” he said.

Sokoyi called on all progressive political formations, civil organizations and members of the public to join the “ongoing battle against this scam”.

The memorandum was received by a SASSA official who said they will forward it to the head office.
