JOHANNESBURG - The Gupta family and its companies say they would welcome any process that would end what it calls wild speculation about its dealings with government.

Yesterday, South African Communist Party (SACP) second Deputy General Secretary Solly Mapaila said, ‘you didn't have to be a rocket scientist to work out the lines of influence' when companies linked to Duduzane Zuma sought government business or dealt with regulators.

Mapaila has called for a judicial commission of inquiry into the influence of corporations and the Gupta family, saying the president's son shouldn't be enriching himself through deals with the state.

Political analyst Professor Tinyiko Maluleke says is this not just about the Guptas, but also about President Jacob Zuma.

"We are going through a time where there are a lot of proxies under attack at the moment and the Guptas are one such proxy."
