The South African Communist Party mourns the death of Sifiso Maphumulo, founding President of Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa.
His loss came just weeks after Congress of South African Trade Unions - COSATU - admitted LUMISA as its latest affiliate.
Maphumulo died last night in a car accident.
The car - in which he and three other union officials, including General-Secretary, Cedric Gina, were travelling - overturned on the N3 just past Estcourt.
The SACP says Maphumulo served as a negotiator - advancing and defending workers` interests.
The party also lauded his long-term service as COSATU`s Isipingo Local Chairperson.
The SACP says Maphumulo died while on a mission building workers` unity and defending the home of metalworkers in COSATU.
The party said it would continue to work with COSATU in ensuring that - the historic mission which Maphumulo lived for - would reach a successful conclusion.
