President Thabo Mbeki has lashed out at people who masquerade as members of the African National Congress, selling the party's membership for their own profit, according to SABC radio news.

Speaking yesterday at the Thabong Indoor Centre in Welkom, Free State, Mbeki said the ANC was aware of such people. He said they were using the ANC's name for their own interest, but added that the party would defeat them. He said the duty of ANC members was to serve the people, not to aim for leadership positions.

Mbeki said those who did not want to serve the interests of the people should leave the party. - Sapa
