NELSPRUIT - The Mpumalanga Department of Roads and Transport issued a warning that it will continue to impound unroadworthy public transport even though their actions left hundreds of commuters stranded.
Seven buses from City to City, one from Translux and one from Panthera, and two taxis were impounded when it was found they were travelling along the N4 near Nelspruit in an unroadworthy condition.
Spokesman for the Department of Transport, Vukani Mnyandu, said emotions ran high and were sometimes on the verge of exploding when "dumped" passengers had to wait for alternative transport.
The vehicles were escorted to Mbombela Local Municipality testing station.
Most of them had oil leaks, poor braking systems and faulty steering mechanisms. Bus companies had to pay fines of R1 500 to retrieve their vehicles. - CNS
