DURBAN - A bakkie driver involved in a "fender bender" in Durban stunned his fellow motorists by shooting himself at the accident scene,

paramedics said on Thursday.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the man, whom it was believed was driving a Toyota Hilux bakkie, was involved in an accident on the M4 motorway's Himalaya Bridge near Merewent on Wednesday afternoon.

Netcare 911 paramedics on scene were told that the man climbed out of

his bakkie and, together with other motorists, inspected the damage without saying a word. He then went back to his bakkie, retrieved a 9mm pistol and shot himself in the head.

Paramedics who arrived on scene had been told that the man had muttered "Now I caused a lot of trouble", before he shot himself. They declared him dead at the scene.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Rani John confirmed the shooting, but could

not immediately provide details.

It was not known how many other motorists were involved in the accident,

but no one else was injured in the accident or the shooting. - Sapa
