Once the cradle of apartheid's top leadership and home of the Afrikaner intellectual elite, Stellenbosch University has shortlisted two candidates for its top position of rector - one is black and the other Jewish.

They are Russel Botman, vice rector (teaching) at Stellenbosch University, and Victor Prozesky, physicist and expert in the field of corporate governance and leadership.

Botman is also president of the SA Council of Churches, a foe of apartheid considered so dangerous by then state president PW Botha that his armed forces bombed its headquarters - Khotso House in Joburg - in 1989.

Stellenbosch communications manager Mohamed Shaikh said: "The two candidates will have the opportunity to address a joint session of Stellenbosch University's Senate, the Institutional Forum and the Selection Committee on their views of Stellenbosch University's future and how they would define their roles in this future."
