SACP Limpopo Province is saddened by unabated road fatalities in Limpopo Province
21 October 2018
The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Limpopo Province is deeply saddened by the death of 28 people involved in a multiple vehicle accident on the national route - N1 between Kranskop Toll Gate and Mookgophong on Friday 19 October 2018. The SACP pays respects and expresses deep heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the survivors a speedy and full recovery.
The SACP calls on government at national and provincial levels to declare a week of mourning, in memory of the deceased. In the past month, about 20 people lost their lives on the N1. Friday`s accident raised the number to almost 50 within two months. The carnage must be stopped.
The Department of Transport must ensure a speedy implementation of sustainable road safety measures on the N1 especially along the notorious road stretch where most incidents of death occur. Adequate deployment of personnel and resources must be dedicated towards curbing horrific road accidents.
Volunteers for road safety should be considered by the Department of Transport as part of increasing law enforcement on the N1 critical accident zones. In addition, the government must conduct an enquiry into fatal road accidents, which inevitably have a
negative effect on the socio-economic conditions of the people and the national fiscus.
The SACP further calls on motorists to observe the rules of the road, reduce speed and stop overloading.
