SACP celebrates its 97th founding anniversary

30 July 2018

Today, Monday 30 July 2018 marks the 97th anniversary of the founding of the South African Communist Party as the Communist Party of South Africa at the launching congress of the Party, held from 30 July to 1 August 1921 in Cape Town. The congress consolidated a number of communist organisations from different parts of South Africa. The International Socialist League, the largest, was founded in 1915 in opposition to the imperialist war, the so-called First World War that broke out in 1914.

The Communist Party became the first non-racial political organisation in South Africa and was the first political organisation to be banned by the apartheid regime. The Party reconstituted itself as the South African Communist Party in 1953 after it had been forced underground by the ban, imposed in 1950 under the Suppression of Communism Act.

The Communist Party played a major role in our struggle for liberation and social emancipation, as well as in international proletarian solidarity struggles. This role includes the establishment of our Alliance through the ratification in January 1929 of the Communist International resolution on the South African Question. The Alliance spearheaded our national liberation movement towards the defeat of the apartheid regime in 1994.
