SACP condemns genocide on Afrin, Northern Syria

6 March 2018

There is a campaign of gratuitous genocide unfolding on Afrin, Northern Syria, carried out by the Turkish military along with paid jihadist mercenaries of the so-called Free Syrian Army and Al-Qaeda who have invaded a sovereign territory.

The SACP expresses its total condemnation of the unfolding Turkish invasion, aggression and genocide against the people in Afrin. Turkey should immediately halt the massacre on the population in Afrin and stop the war crime and violation of international law.

The Turkish President Erdogan personally sanctioned a military operation of air raids, bombings, with tanks and troops in Afrin, leaving behind a trail of destruction and thousands of innocent casualties, men, women and children.  In this operation Turkey employs high-tech weapons from the United States, Great Britain and Germany.

This tragedy occurs when the political power balance in the region started to change, albeit gradually, with the weakening of foreign imperialists and their influence in Syria. It is a fact that the changed situation was achieved partially with the direct contribution of the people of Afrin and the Kurdish people. The change dealt a devastating blow to the Turkish supported Islamic State terrorists and to the objectives of imperialism in that region.

In the light of the situation, Turkey cannot disguise its doctrine of regional superiority and its economic greed to draw benefits for the ruling class in Ankara. The continuation of the onslaught serves its imperialist allies, the US, apartheid Israel and their lackeys in the Middle East and elsewhere.

The South African government should denounce the carnage and play its part to see an end to the genocide.

The SACP calls on the people of South Africa to join the international condemnation of Turkey`s reaction and this crime against humanity.
