Statement on possible water cuts
28 November 2017
The South African Communist Party is deeply concerned about the news that the Department of Water and Sanitation has notified municipalities that it would cut the bulk of water supply should they fail to pay their historical water debts. The SACP calls on government to go to the root of the problem, including the plight of the masses, and to explore alternative measures rather than embark on reckless decisions that will only hurt the poor and working class families.
Priority must be given to ensuring good governance in the department, bringing looting activities to an end in water boards, the department's agencies and across the board, and holding accountable those involved in the malfeasance. The SACP will discuss this matter at its forthcoming Augmented Central Committee meeting to be held from Friday to Sunday, 1-3 December 2017.
The SACP invites the media to cover the post-meeting press briefing to be held as follows.
Date: Sunday, 3 December 2017
Venue: Protea Hotel OR Tambo Airport, Cnr York and Gladiator streets, Rhodesfield, Kempton
The SACP further invites the media to a photo op to take place at the same venue as follows.
Date: Friday, 1 December 2017
