SACP in Gauteng Province calls for an investigation into the death of children in Soshanguve
14 November 2017
The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Gauteng Province calls for an independent, transparent and open investigation into the death of the children of the working class in Soshanguve, City of Tshwane.
Five children died last week after a collapse of a high mast light whilst playing in the street. They were buried over the weekend, whilst two are recovering from their injuries.
The SACP believes that the Democratic Alliance (DA)-Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) municipality in the City of Tshwane has a case to answer following the death of the children. We give the DA-EFF City of Tshwane 7 days from tomorrow, Wednesday, 15th November to announce the establishment of the investigation process. We are ready to mobilise our structures should the DA-EFF run municipality fail to create an independent investigation.
We believe that the allegation that the DA-EFF run municipality neglected to maintain and fix the high mast light immediately after receiving complaints from the community is a matter that should not be taken lightly.
We are deeply concerned about the allegation that the Executive Mayor, Councillor Solly Msimang had earlier visited the area and received complaints from the community about the threat to life that was posed by the continued neglect of the maintenance of the high mast light.
We believe that the allegation that the Executive Mayor issued a directive that the high mast light be fixed whilst fully aware that the DA-EFF City of Tshwane municipality has shifted funds away from working class residential areas to suburbs, constitutes a serious act of negligence of these areas.
We further believe that only an independent, open and transparent investigation process can clear the Executive Mayor of allegations that the failed maintenance and delays in fixing of the high mast light was well known to him. This is even made worse by the fact that this was due to a lack of funds to fix and maintain the high mast lights.
We believe that only an independent, transparent, open and reputable investigation process and its outcomes can provide the necessary condition and environment for the families to heal.
We dismiss with contempt the consistent lie by the DA-EFF City of Tshwane run municipality blaming the "nyaope" smoking youth for the collapse of the high mast light.
We are now even more vindicated that this DA-EFF run municipality must be urgently placed under administration to avoid more deaths considering the shift of resources from townships and informal settlements to suburbs. The DA-EFF City of Tshwane municipality has effectively collapsed and is now allegedly causing deaths of innocent people due to its shift of resources from working class residential areas to suburbs.
We further call on national and provincial governments to monitor the process of setting up the independent, transparent, open and credible investigation process. This is critical to ensure that the lives of the poor children of the working class are not treated and regarded as cheap with the truth swept below the carpet.
Whilst the facts and circumstances are yet to be investigated, it is clear from the alleged set of preliminary facts that the DA-EFF City of Tshwane has blood of children on its hands.
We will not rest until the truth is known on the factors and circumstances that led to the untimely death of the beloved children of the working class.
