SACP statement on the passing away of YCL Deputy National Secretary
17 September 2012
The SACP has received with shock and sadness the news of the passing away of the Deputy National Secretary of the Young Communist League, Cde Mike Mokhutshane.
Cde Mike passed on in the early hours of Sunday, 16 September 2012.
In his short life Cde Mike had dedicated his life to serve and liberate the working class and the poor. Throughout his schooldays, his days at Vaal University of Technology and as a worker he identified with working class struggle and working class organisation.
His attraction to the Marxist- Leninist scientific outlook of life saw him join the SACP and playing a leadership role in the Young Communist League from the days of his inception. His peers admired him for his commitment to the struggle for Socialism. His modesty and discipline at the time at which the barbaric system of capitalism has targeted the youth was amazing. Consumerism, a ‘dog eat dog’ mentality has torn apart our youth and undermining its revolutionary morality. Cde Mike didn’t fall into this trap.
During the moment when most young people have shelved the need to earn an honest wage and chase wealth through corrupt means, Cde Mike, who was a senior civil servant, refused to use his position to enrich himself. He abhorred the use of political office and proximity to political power for self-enrichment.
In honour of Cde Mike the SACP commits to pursue its 13th National Congress resolution to de-tenderise the state and to build strong co-operatives to deliver services to our people. This resolution Cde Mike pioneered and supported.
Cde Mike had recently visited the People’s Republic of China as part of an SACP delegation invited by the Communist Party of China. He was a very enthusiastic participant in the study tour that served to strengthen his commitment to socialism.
Cde Mike stood for unity of the movement. He understood that unity couldn’t be built with those who want to capture our movement for self-enrichment. The SACP will, in his honour, pursue this goal.
He executed his last official assignment when he attended the plenary session of the National Committee of the YCL over the weekend 7-9 September 2012. He was his usual self. Little did his colleagues in the National Committee know that he was bidding them farewell.
The SACP expresses its deep condolonces to the family, friends and comrades in the Young Communist League and the broader movement that Cde Mike belonged to.
