SACP Statement on the Death of Nomakhwezi Hani
12 March 2001
The South African Communist Party (SACP) is saddened by the sudden passing away of Nomakhwezi Lerato Hani (the 23 year-old daughter of our late General Secretary, Comrade Chris Hani) on the morning of 10 March 2001.
Nomakhwezi will be buried next to her father on Saturday, 17 March 2001 in Boksburg.
During his visit to the Hani family yesterday, the SACP General Secretary, Blade Nzimande expressed our condolences to Mrs. Dimpho Hani, the Hani family and friends.
We share the pain and grief of the loss of Nomakhwezi who was still at the prime of her life and this happens only three months after the death of her grandmother, Mrs. Nomayise Hani (the mother of Comrade Chris Hani). Early on in her life, Nomakhwezi experienced the tragedy of being with her father when Janusz Walus callously and cowardly mowed him down on 10 April 1993.
The SACP also wishes to condemn the City Press Newspaper for its notorious and unjustifiable exaggerations and speculations on the causes of Nomakhwezi's death on its front-page article in its issue of 11 March 2001. It is opportunist of the City Press to choose not to wait for the results of the post-mortem process, which will give us answers about Nomakhwezi's death. The SACP calls on all South Africans to allow the Hani family to mourn in dignity.
