5 October 2012
The SACP has received with sadness the news of the passing away of Comrade Zwelakhe Sisulu. Our deepest condolences to the family, friends and relatives of comrade Zwelakhe.
Comrade Zwelakhe has been active in the struggle against the barbaric system of apartheid on many fronts, including his active participation in the National Education Co-ordinating Committee (NECC) and as a progressive journalist. The brand of journalism and the values of journalism that Comrade Zwelakhe represented have sadly diminished in our society today and is increasingly being replaced by sensationalist and shallow journalism.
He represented a strong voice in the construction of a society with a diverse media and was prepared to lead under harsh conditions. Today, in a democratic dispensation diversity in the media doesn`t exist. In the honour of Cde Zwelakhe, who also played an important role in the transformation of the SABC from a state broadcaster to a public broadcaster, we must deepen our efforts to build a diverse media sector and a strong public broadcaster not controlled by the whims of advertisers.
The SACP dips its red banner in honour of this hero of our struggle for freedom, democracy and self-determination.
