SACP convenes a local government workshop

The 2nd Special National Congress of the SACP adopted a discussion document of the SACP entitled “Local Government, Cooperative Governance and the Developmental State: A Discussion Paper” and further instructed the Central Committee to convene a National Workshop on Local Government to consider the role of the SAC structures in the turnaround of local government.
It is against this background that the SACP will convene a Conference of Commissars focusing on Local Government, from the 15th July to 18 July 2010, under the theme "Building Working Class Power To Transform Local Government for Socialism".
The conference, to be attended by delegates from SACP Districts and Provinces, alliance partners and invited personalities, is convened to specifically:
a. Deepen understanding of the relationship between local government transformation and the struggle for socialism.
b. Review progress on the implementation of the resolution on local government and cooperative governance adopted in December 2009 Special National Congress against the background of previous resolutions on local government and cooperative governance.
c. Prepare for the 2011 local government elections.
d. Consider the relationship between traditional leadership and local government.
e. Develop the SACP’s response to proposals on a new model of local government as part of the cooperative governance system.
f. Prepare inputs to the ANC’s National General Council in September this year.
The SACP General Secretary, Cde Blade Nzimande and the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr. Sicelo Shiceka will officially open the conference tomorrow as follows:.
